Indeed these landslide dams have disastrous consequences, not only to the people living in the vicinity but to the people living as far as hundreds and thousands of kilometers away, mainly in the downstream region. I have the opportunity to study the consequences of two landslide outburst dams, both were formed in the Tibet and their consequences were felt in India. These dams got outbursted in 2000 and 2005. The details about the same can be seen in

  Dear all:

It is indeed a serious concern that so many river blocking dams have been formed due to the earthquake in Sichuan. Earthquakes are second most important factor causing river damming landslides. Experience has shown that 40% of landslide dams fail within a week of its formation. The longevity of landslide dams depends on the rate of inflow, size and shape of the dam and geophysical characteristics of the dam. It is, therefore necessary to take quick action in case of a landslide dam formation.

Higher the inflow, sooner the outburst can occur. I do not think a big-scale counter measure can be possible here. Some local level measures can help save harm to a large number of people living downstream of the dammed locations. First and foremost, the people living downstream should be informed about the impending danger. There are some methods to make rough estimates of the likely extent of the flood that can occur from the outburst. This in turn can provide an idea on the extent of the area to be impacted and to manage the evacuation process. Community based early warning system can be a very efficient mean to warn the people living downstream of the ephemeral impoundments in case of an outburst. If the damming is large and the impoundments remains for longer time a more detailed analysis and countermeasures can be implemented.

Let us hope that those temporary damming of rivers do not cause additional casualties and damages.

  Best regards,

  Arun

  Dear Disaster Risk Reduction practitioners.

The 21 new lakes formed due to massive landslides resulting from the earthquake in China have created a potential danger to downstream communities. As of today, there is a report of no danger since water is overflowing from these lakes. However, a team of experts is continuously monitoring the situation to reduce the potential impacts. There are also some reports of aftershocks in the region which have posed a great threat to these lakes.

Please find the news report from sifynews.

  With best regards,
  Santosh Nepal

Beijing: Massive landslides resulting from the strong earthquake of 7.8 magnitude on May 12, 2008 in southwest China, have led to the formation of at least 21 lakes in various cities after land blocked the rivers flow. Water has been flowing over some of these blockages in Qingchuan county, but posed no danger.

Expert teams, comprising at least two water conservancy specialists and 10 People's Liberation Army personnel, have been deployed at each of these newly formed lakes to monitor the situation and evacuate the residents in case of any danger.

"Preliminary monitoring stations have been set up near each lake," the China Daily quoted Sichuan vice-Governor Li Chengyun as telling media persons.
The government will evacuate people in the downstream areas of the lakes as soon as situation warrants, Li added.

The landslide blockages have been reported in Beichuan and Anxian counties in the city of Mianyang, Qingchuan county of Guangyuan, Mianzhu and Shifang cities of Deyang, and Pengzhou city near the provincial capital Chengdu.

The three lakes had more than 10 million cu m of water, and more than 20 million cu m of rocks slid into rivers after the quake and formed the lakes said an official with the headquarters for quake relief in Qingchuan.

Seven more landslide blockages were found in Beichuan county, about 160 km from the epicenter, Wenchuan.
